School Boat Indonesia as a Form of Support for Inclusive Education for All Indonesian Children

by Igo Kleden

BALI – The Panji Ibrahim Muhammad Foundation (YPIM Foundation) launched the Indonesian School Boat program which aims to improve the quality of children’s education in coastal areas.

Meralda Adam, the initiator of the program under the auspices of the YPIM Foundation, said that the School Boat Indonesia program is designed to facilitate coastal children not to drop out of school.

“The idea for this program was inspired by my experience visiting Kampung Kerora in Rinca Island. There is only 1 (one) Elementary School there and to continue their education to the next level, they have to cross the ocean with very dangerous strong currents. This situation is exacerbated by the absence of a special ship for pick-up and drop-off, so children have to separate from their parents and live with neighbors in Rinca Village to be closer to school,” he said.

Meralda explained that the poverty that occurs in coastal communities is partly due to the low level of education, economic access, and government policies that have not equitably favored fishing communities. One way to break the chain of poverty in coastal areas is to improve the quality of education.

The School Boat Indonesia program is a community-based program with the principle of collaboration with the community in order to be able to create a broad impact.

This program is driven by WeThrive Social Impact Creative Agency. WeThrive is a communications consulting firm that assists local and global companies and organizations in campaigning for social programs based on the Sustainable Development Goals.

“We are moved to support the Indonesian School Boat Program because education is one of the SDGs goals that we focus on. Education is an effort to prepare quality human resources to be able to create a better life. Quality human resources can lead Indonesia to progress,” said Nadia Zein, Founder & CEO of WeThrive.

To realize the plan for the School Boat Indonesia program, YPIM Foundation held a fundraising event that involved a number of artists and musicians from Bali and Flores in an art exhibition concept. This exhibition involves the collaboration of 10 artists namely Studiodikubu, Iluh Bali, OpenArt, Ketut Efrata and Aldy Riyadhi.

The opening event of the exhibition will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 19.00 WITA and will last until October 23, 2022 at Deus Bali.

In this exhibition, Studiodikubu presents works in the form of installations and products, while Iluh Bali, which is a community of female painters, presents visual works through their personal experiences as well as their views on Kampung Kerora. Open Art contributed through portrait photography, Ketut Efrata through his book entitled Lejong ke Labuan Bajo, while Aldy Riyadhi contributed through photography of life in Kampung Kerora.
