Strong Commitment to Environmental Ecosystem Recovery through Coral Reef Restoration in Padang Bai, Bali
DENPASAR, GLOBALONE.ID – PT Sompo Insurance Indonesia (“Sompo Insurance”) has demonstrated its commitment to restoring the environmental ecosystem in Bali by carrying out coral reef restoration in Padang Bai, Bali, on Wednesday (May 21, 2025). This initiative is part of Sompo Insurance’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, particularly under the “Environment” sustainability pillar.
Eric Nemitz, President Director of Sompo Insurance, stated that the planting of baby corals in collaboration with a partner social organization is a tangible expression of the company’s support for ecosystem recovery efforts.
“We understand that coral reef ecosystems require full and continuous attention. Through the planting of baby corals in partnership with a social organization, this initiative represents our real contribution to ecosystem recovery,” said Eric.
Coral reefs are complex ecosystems primarily built by calcium-producing organisms (mainly corals), along with other marine life that inhabit the seabed and water column. Indonesia is home to over 51,000 square kilometers of coral reefs, equivalent to 18% of the world’s total. These ecosystems serve as critical habitats for a wide variety of marine species, including plants, animals, and microorganisms.
However, coral reef ecosystems are increasingly under threat due to human activities and the impact of global warming. The decline in live coral cover could severely damage marine biodiversity and disrupt the balance of ocean ecosystems.
Environmental recovery efforts in the waters of Padang Bai — an area renowned for its rich marine biodiversity — represent an important step in rehabilitating marine ecosystems in the region.
Bali also holds special meaning for Sompo Insurance, as it was here that the company first began its business operations in 1975.
“Today’s activity is also a reminder of our roots as the company celebrates its 50th anniversary, with the main celebration to be held on June 1, 2025, in Jakarta,” Eric added.
Today, in addition to Bali, Sompo Insurance operates through more than 24 marketing offices across Indonesia and provides 24-hour customer service via hotline 14051.
The same message was conveyed by Ruthania Martinelly, Head of Brand & Corporate Communication at Sompo Insurance, during a media gathering on Wednesday (May 21, 2025) in Padang Bai, Karangasem, Bali. She emphasized Sompo Insurance’s strong commitment to environmental ecosystem recovery, one of which is being carried out through coral reef restoration. In this initial phase, 250 baby corals will be planted, with hopes that they will grow and help restore the natural beauty of the Padang Bai seas.
“This coral planting is part of our efforts to support the environmental pillar and contribute to ecosystem recovery. We believe this is very important, as data shows that the number of damaged coral reefs now outweighs healthy ones. So we are here in Padang Bai to contribute to the preservation of Bali’s nature and environment,” Ruthania explained.
Meanwhile, Albert Tamin from Livingseas, the organization entrusted by Sompo Insurance to carry out the coral reef planting, expressed his gratitude to Sompo Insurance for its growing concern for coral reef restoration. He emphasized that this should become a collective movement to preserve our marine environment and ensure it continues to support life for future generations.
Albert also expressed hope that other companies will follow Sompo Insurance’s lead in supporting coral reef restoration efforts across Indonesia. ***
