BALI, ULTIMOPARADISO.COM — President Prabowo Subianto officially inaugurated the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Bali International Hospital (BIH) in Denpasar City, Bali Province, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. In his speech, the President expressed deep appreciation for the efforts of all parties who have pioneered and developed the Sanur SEZ, calling it a historic breakthrough in the landscape of healthcare services in Indonesia.
“I would like to extend my gratitude and appreciation to everyone involved in initiating the development of this Special Economic Zone, which is dedicated to healthcare. I believe this is a breakthrough — the first of its kind in our republic,” said President Prabowo during his remarks at the Bali Beach Convention Center.
The Sanur SEZ is a fully integrated area developed as a world-class health and tourism destination. Through this initiative, the government aims to reduce the number of Indonesian citizens seeking medical treatment abroad — a trend that has resulted in a significant outflow of national foreign exchange reserves.
“We were informed earlier about the large number of Indonesians traveling overseas for medical care, causing substantial foreign exchange expenditure. With this initiative, we can offer healthcare services that are on par with the best in the world,” President Prabowo affirmed.
The Sanur SEZ is not only designed to serve Indonesian patients but is also expected to become a leading destination for international medical travelers. By 2045, the zone is projected to create over 18,375 jobs, save up to IDR 86 trillion in foreign exchange, and generate an additional IDR 19.6 trillion in foreign exchange earnings.
Key infrastructure within the Sanur SEZ includes an international-standard hospital, a five-star hotel, Bali’s largest convention center with a capacity of 5,000 people, a 4.9-hectare Ethnobotanical Garden housing more than 380 species of medicinal plants, as well as an MSME center and commercial zones designed to empower local entrepreneurs.
President Prabowo also extended special appreciation to the international partners who played a role in the project.
“To our friends from abroad, thank you once again for your participation and support. I believe this Special Economic Zone for Medical and Healthcare Services is something Indonesia can truly be proud of, and we deeply value your contributions,” he concluded.
The inauguration was also attended by several high-ranking officials, including Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir, Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Rosan Roeslani, Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.***
